KIM runs an extensive group work programme in Flintshire and Wrexham. We are also planning to develop our group activities in other areas of North Wales. KIM provides courses over three terms with the exception of the drop-ins which are on going throughout the year. Every group and activity provided by KIM provides women with opportunities to increase confidence, socialise and improve and maintain positive wellbeing. Groups run in the last few terms include computers, confident me, creative writing, understanding me, sugar craft, pottery, inspiring me.
KIM’s group sessions help ordinary women who are suffering from mental ill health to regain their former confidence. To access KIM’s support you are not required to have a medical diagnosis, so any woman is welcome. We also work hard to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health so that women can continue on the path to recovery without prejudices.
Supports by addressing emotional and social needs
Provides a link between health services and the wider community
Encourages progression towards personal aims and aspirations
Recognises that the way to positivity and wellbeing is a process and not an end point or destination
KIM currently works with around 300 women in Flintshire and Wrexham communities. We use community based venues to introduce and familiarise women with resources in their area. As a result of KIM’s support women have progressed to new hobbies, college courses, or returned to employment. We also have an annual consultation day attended by clients, their families, and other organisations where we gather feedback and ideas for development.
“KIM has made me think more positive about life, especially going through bereavement – life is worth living.”
Some of the women receiving support from KIM have been developing and facilitating their own group session. For example, Understanding Me and Inspiring Me are both 10 week courses around well being and recovery, and are written and facilitated by women with personal experience of mental distress and positive coping strategies.
“I like the way women who’ve been through their own mental health issues run the groups, and I felt that Dorothy who did Understanding Me has helped me to laugh, smile, accept, and understand myself, and feel less alone.”
Other topics women have used their skills to develop are nutrition, food and mood, confidence building, drama, relaxation, body language, and a variety of different crafts.
“I think KIM is fantastic and it does so much for us, the volunteers and clients are really friendly. I felt comfortable, everyone is so supportive and understanding which is so important, they do so well, I cannot give enough praise to KIM.”
