Become a KIM Volunteer
Community Group Volunteer
You will always find our excellent volunteers at any KIM event. They are there to support and offer a warm welcome. KIM’s volunteers do lots of important work behind the scenes such as making calls, computer work, administration and helping to organise walks or events. We wouldn’t be able to offer as many options to our clients without their input and support.
KIM community group volunteers undergo a 10 week OCN level 2 accredited training course, covering mental health awareness, professional boundaries, confidentiality, equality and diversity, risk assessment and more. We currently have 33 volunteers in Flintshire, Wrexham, Gwynedd and Anglesey and run regular training courses. Volunteers meet every 4 weeks and are offered individual supervision on a 6 monthly basis but support is always available.
We encourage volunteers to continue their personal development through further training opportunities via other organisations, some examples are: Mental Health First Aid, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), Wellness Recovery Action Planning Training, City and Guilds level 3 Certificate in Mental Health Practice in the Community, Computer qualifications.
Hospital Group Volunteer
KIM community group volunteers can undergo an extra training session in order to support the groups in the psychiatric unit of the local hospital in Wrexham. KIM runs a weekly group for female patients where they can take part in activities such as crafts, pampering, gentle exercise, gardening, cooking etc. When the women are discharged they can be referred to KIM’s community groups and therefore receive continuing support from KIM when they get home.
Café KIM Volunteer
We are always looking for more volunteers to help out with the running of Café KIM in Wrexham Hospital’s Heddfan Unit. Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be trained as a KIM volunteer to help out. There is a short Cafe training session and further training and support are offered including qualifications such as the food hygiene certificate. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
The café and shop relies on the support we receive from our Cafe volunteers and it is a great way to increase confidence, gain new skills and meet new people. For more information about Café KIM please go to the Social Enterprise page.

“Last year I was chatting with a friend I have met since joining KIM and she was a volunteer at the KIM cafe. I made a casual comment to her that I wished I could be confident enough to do something like that and she encouraged me to give it a try. I met her there one day to see how it was and never looked back. I decided to give it a go and I now work there as a volunteer on Wednesday for the whole day. I get up on Wednesday morning with a buzz of excitement as I look forward to the day ahead. I have met some lovely ladies whilst working there and the full time staff are always helpful. I broke myself in gradually starting with making sandwiches, jacket potatoes and stacking shelves. I had never had experience with a till so after a month working there I felt I had the confidence to use it. The girls were so patient helping me to learn this skill. The new skills I have gained have given me a real buzz and I am now able to chat with the cafe clients. The days go by so quickly. I have also helped out when they have been short of volunteers.
If anyone is thinking of volunteer work to help them recover from their illness, I would say please give the cafe a try as we will make you feel welcome and also understand what you need to recover at your own pace and you won’t be pressured into doing things you don’t feel comfortable with.
I would like to say I have also seen volunteers of all ages who started after me and watched them become more confident and outgoing since they joined the brilliant team at the cafe.”
